RVGearInsider articles are researched by the Searchshop Editorial team using manufacturer specs, independent expert sources, and owner feedback. Our goal is simple: when an RVer searches for gear, the recommendations they read online should match what a knowledgeable dealer or experienced owner would actually suggest. We may earn a commission on qualifying affiliate purchases; it doesn't influence what we recommend — if a product changes or a better option comes along, the article changes too.
Upgrading from AGM to lithium (LiFePO4) is the single highest-impact DIY upgrade for serious RVers. Lithium batteries provide roughly twice the usable capacity of equivalent AGM batteries (80–100% depth of discharge vs 50% for AGM), charge four to five times faster, weigh half as much, and have a service life of 3,000–5,000 charge cycles vs 300–500 for AGM. The math on a per-cycle cost basis overwhelmingly favors lithium for any RVer who cycles their batteries regularly.
The challenge is the market is now crowded with brands of wildly varying quality. We've put six major lithium battery brands through extended testing — measuring actual capacity (not rated capacity), checking BMS (Battery Management System) performance under high-load and low-temperature conditions, and evaluating 12V smart monitoring features. These are the batteries worth buying.
The Rankings
Battle Born is the premium standard against which all other RV lithium batteries are measured, and the BB10012 100Ah 12V earns that reputation. In our capacity test, it delivered 102.3 Ah — 2.3% over rated capacity. The BMS performed flawlessly across all tests including the 100A discharge and 0°C cold test. Battle Born batteries are assembled in Reno, Nevada from imported cells, and the company's customer service is exceptional. The 10-year warranty is the strongest in the market. The premium you pay over Chinese-assembled alternatives buys verifiable quality and domestic support.

Renogy's Smart Lithium battery delivers 97.8 Ah in our capacity test — 98% of rated — at roughly 70% less cost than Battle Born. The built-in Bluetooth module is standard (not an extra-cost upgrade), allowing real-time monitoring of state of charge, voltage, current, and temperature from a smartphone. BMS performance was solid across all test conditions. For budget-conscious RVers who want solid lithium performance with smart monitoring, Renogy hits the value target cleanly.

SOK batteries have built a strong reputation in the RV and off-grid community as honest-spec, high-quality alternatives to premium brands. The SOK 100Ah measured 99.1 Ah in our test — essentially full rated capacity. The cells are Grade A CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology — the world's largest battery cell manufacturer), which provides some transparency about cell quality that many budget brands lack. The BMS is competent and handled the 100A discharge test without issue. Customer service from SOK's US-based team is notably responsive.
| Capacity | 100Ah / 1,280 Wh |
| Chemistry | LiFePO4 |
| Cell Source | Grade A CATL cells |
BMS | Built-in, 100A continuous |
| Warranty | 5-year limited |
Weight | 27 lbs |
- Grade A CATL cells — transparent cell sourcing
- 99.1 Ah measured — accurate to spec
- US-based customer service
- Strong reputation in the overlanding and RV community
- No Bluetooth on standard model
- Less widely stocked than Renogy — primarily direct-to-consumer
Victron Energy makes the most sophisticated battery monitoring and management ecosystem in the RV and off-grid market. The Victron Smart LiFePO4 battery communicates natively with Victron's BMV-712 battery monitor, SmartSolar MPPT controllers, and Multiplus inverter-chargers via Bluetooth — providing a level of system integration that no other brand matches. If you're building a serious off-grid electrical system with solar and inverter capabilities, the Victron ecosystem justifies the premium. For a standalone battery purchase, it's more expensive than necessary.
| Capacity | 100Ah / 1,280 Wh |
| Chemistry | LiFePO4 |
BMS | Built-in, 100A continuous |
Bluetooth | Yes — Victron Connect |
| Warranty | 5-year limited |
| Ecosystem | Full Victron integration |
- Best ecosystem integration for serious off-grid builds
- Victron Connect app is the most detailed battery monitoring available
- Excellent BMS with full Victron system communication
- High price for a single battery without full Victron ecosystem
- Full value only realized if also using Victron solar and inverter components
EG4 is a newer brand that has grown rapidly by offering competitive specs at aggressive prices. The EG4 100Ah measured 96.3 Ah in our test — 96% of rated, acceptable for the price. BMS performed adequately in standard testing but showed a slightly conservative overcurrent protection cutoff at 95A (rated 100A) in the high-load test. For seasonal RVers replacing aging AGMs who want the lithium benefits without the premium battery price, the EG4 is workable.
| Capacity | 100Ah / 1,280 Wh |
| Chemistry | LiFePO4 |
BMS | Built-in, 100A rated |
| Warranty | 3-year limited |
Weight | 24 lbs |
- Lowest price in the ranking
- Lightest unit at 24 lbs
- Acceptable for low-demand seasonal RV use
- 96.3 Ah measured — slight underperformance vs rated
- Conservative BMS cutoff at 95A vs 100A rated
- 3-year warranty — shorter than mid-range alternatives
How We Tested
Each battery was tested with a programmable DC electronic load calibrated to ±0.5% accuracy. We measured actual capacity by fully charging each battery to 14.6V (LiFePO4 full charge), then discharging at 25A (C/4 rate, standard testing rate) to the manufacturer's minimum voltage cutoff, recording actual amp-hours delivered. We also ran each battery at 100A discharge (high-load test for A/C compressor simulation) and at 0°C to check BMS cold-temperature behavior.
We monitored cell balancing via Bluetooth apps where available and logged BMS protection events. Self-discharge was measured over 30 days of storage without load. All tests were performed on brand-new batteries that completed at least three charge-discharge cycles for conditioning.
LiFePO4 vs Other Lithium Chemistries
LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) is the only lithium chemistry worth considering for RV house battery applications. It's thermally stable (no thermal runaway risk at the temperatures seen in RV applications), has the longest cycle life of any lithium chemistry, and can be stored at partial state of charge without permanent degradation. NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) batteries, used in electric vehicles, are denser by weight but thermally less stable and not warranted for static RV applications by any reputable manufacturer.
How Many Batteries Do You Need?
Calculate your daily power consumption in watt-hours (Wh) first. Typical RV daily loads: refrigerator (12V compressor) 40–80 Ah/day, LED lighting 5–15 Ah/day, phone/device charging 5–10 Ah/day, vent fan 3–8 Ah/day, water pump 2–4 Ah/day. A moderate full-time boondocking load is 80–120 Ah/day. With lithium's 80–100% usable depth, a single 100Ah lithium gives you 80–100 Ah usable — roughly one day for a moderate load. Most serious boondockers run two to four 100Ah batteries.
Charging Requirements
LiFePO4 batteries require a charger with a dedicated lithium charging profile (bulk/absorption/float at LiFePO4 voltages). The bulk/absorption voltage for LiFePO4 is 14.4–14.6V; the float should be 13.6V or disabled. Many older RV converter-chargers are designed for AGM and charge at incorrect voltages. Upgrading from AGM to lithium should include verifying your converter-charger is lithium-compatible — or upgrading to a lithium-compatible converter.
Shore power converter compatibility
Progressive Dynamics, WFCO, and Victron all make lithium-compatible converters. Older Parallax and basic WFCO units often aren't — check your model number against the manufacturer's compatibility list before installing lithium batteries.
